Swim challenge makes a splash (September 28, 2009)
Four hundred swimmers braved the open water to take part in a one-mile swim for charity.
The unique Hospiscare event took place at Roadford Lake, near Okehampton, on Saturday. The first man across the finishing line was tri-athlete Steve Ferguson, from Plymouth, who completed the course in 21 minutes 15 seconds.
Steve, 30, a network engineer for Mitie, said: “The conditions were perfect, the water was smooth and a good temperature. I’ve done a lot of elite races and this was really well organised.”
The event, which was supported by the South West Lakes Trust and the Echo, saw volunteers helping out both on shore and on the lake.
Angie Martelli, area manager of Roadford Lake, also took part. Angie, 50, said: “It’s been a great event to host and take part in, I finished in 35 minutes. Hospiscare have a very dedicated team. It’s the first time we have done an event like this.”
